Relieve yourself of tax concerns

February 20th, 2012

HM Revenue & Customs are aiming for a climate where all tax returns are filled out online as opposed to on paper, so if you’re self-employed or have more than one source of income and need assistance with the self-assessment process, it’s advisable to seek the help of a tax return service to ensure the process runs accurately and smoothly. The deadlines for completing a tax return electronically have generally been more generous than for paper-based self-assessments, hinting at government’s strong intentions to make the process completely electronic.

Whether you’ve successfully filled in paper-based tax returns before but are unfamiliar with the electronic method, or are simply new to the world of self-assessment, a tax return service can make life much easier. This means that you concentrate on your company’s main focus, content in the knowledge that your tax affairs are being handled confidently. An online self-assessment service can come much cheaper than the rates usually charged by high street accountants, and it’s perfectly possible to get a free quote before deciding upon whether to take this route.

Do You Trust The ‘Taxman?’

June 23rd, 2010

If you are one the many that have ever doubted the need to have an accountant or question why having an accountant is essential to the running of a successful business – then you may need to rethink your current stance.

For instance if you have a student loan you may find that you are paying that debt twice.  Errors in the Revenues computing system have meant that some employers are being asked to deduct money from salaries for a second time – even though the loans have already been paid off.

  • More alarmingly there are a reputed 116 million cases of National Insurance payments which not been credited to the people who have paid them over several years.
  • TEN million P14 records of tax payments sent from employers to HMRC have not been correctly attributed to the correct employee.
  • 420,000 pensioners have not paid any taxes even though they should have done so.  As such they remain liable for the repayment of unpaid taxes.
  • Confidential reports that have been leaked highlight a number of issues relating to coding notices and age allowances.  Consequently there are a number of individuals who are not paying the correct amount of tax.
  • Ironically Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs sees it as the tax payer’s responsibility to work out how much tax should or should not be paid.
  • Worryingly the Her Majesty’s  Revenue & customs  are not aware that the average person does not know how to work out if they are paying the right level of tax and take it on trust that they are.
  • Many employers are left baffled because they have not received the correct tax codes for many of their employees.  Subsequently these employees often end up either; paying too much tax, or facing a sizeable claw back if insufficient tax has been paid.
  • Automatic updating of tax codes for employers has meant that many are not aware anything is wrong until employees become disgruntled about their taxes.

The complexity of the tax system has left many tax payers in a quandary. They are dammed if they pay tax and dammed if they do not. The public as lay people simply do not fully understand the intricacies of the tax system.  Hence many are left with little option but to trust the ‘tax man.  Unfortunately it has emerged that the ‘people in the know are not 100% correct in the way they work out taxes.

So if you cannot trust the ‘tax man who can you trust?’ It would be wise to engage the services of someone who can work independently on your behalf.
